Preserved in a Velvet Lined Box (2024)
watercolour paper, gouache paint, varnish.
Inspired by “ukiyo-e” paintings and performative storytelling like: pop-up books, theatre, and shadow puppets, Emma's paper cutouts are layered to make multi-planar scenes that are dynamic and mysterious.
Preserved in a Velvet Lined Box (2024) is part of her shadow box series. The 3-dimensional paintings are designed to reference a traditional style of Korean jewelry boxes (najeonchilgi) through the exterior’s ornamental patterning. A jewelry box holds and preserves precious items - Emma stores memories inside her boxes. The showcased memories are constructed from illustrated paper cut-outs, which are layered throughout the box to create depth, a theatrical scene, and illude to movement.
